Mick Schwedler – Advanced Energy Design Guide for K-12 School Buildings – Achieving Zero Energy
The Wisconsin Chapter of ASHRAE is proud to announce that on November 19th Mick Schwedler will be presenting ” Advanced Energy Design Guide for K-12 School Buildings – Achieving Zero Energy “.
Speaker Bio:
Mick has been active in the development and support of HVAC systems for Trane since 1982. As an applications engineer his areas of expertise include system optimization (in which he holds patents) as well as chilled water and water source heat pump system design.
Mick serves as a Vice President on the ASHRAE Board of Directors and has been nominated for the position of ASHRAE Treasurer (2019-20). He is an ASHRAE Fellow, recipient of ASHRAE’s Exceptional Service, Distinguished Service, and Standards Achievement Awards, and was Chair of SSPC 90.1-2010 (if you have any comments about that!). Mick also served as Chair of the Advanced Energy Design Guide Steering Committee and was on project committees for the 50% Hospital and Office Buildings AEDGs.
Moving beyond energy to an environmental perspective, Mick presently chairs the LEED Technical Committee and serves on the LEED Steering Committee. He is also a past member of several USGBC technical and education groups, authored portions of the original ASHRAE Green Building Guide, and served on technical groups for the New Buildings Institute.
Presentation Description:
Since 2002, ASHRAE, the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), USGBC, and AIA, with support from the Department of Energy, have collaborated on a series of Advanced Energy Design Guides (AEDGs) that result in significant energy savings in the built environment beyond what is expected by using only ASHRAE Standard 90.1. The AEDG series of documents is now one of the most popular publications in ASHRAE’s history with over 600,000 copies in circulation.
This program provides a brief history of the AEDG Series, and then focuses on the newest group in the AEDG series – Achieving Zero Energy. The first volume in this new series is for Zero Energy K-12 School Building Design, and the program will highlight the major steps and integrated, systematic approach for achieving Zero Energy in schools. Recommended audience: School Boards, administrators and Principals, teachers, consulting engineers, contractors, facilities managers, and students.

Douglas Reindl, PhD PE- ASHRAE 15 update
The Wisconsin Chapter of ASHRAE is proud to announce that on October 17th Doug Reindl will be presenting “ASHRAE 15 Update”.
Speaker Bio:
Douglas Reindl is a professor and chair with appointments in the Department of Engineering Professional Development and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition, he is the founding director of the Industrial Refrigeration Consortium (IRC) at UW-Madison. He received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering Technology from the Milwaukee School of Engineering and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a registered professional engineer in the State of Wisconsin and actively involved in ASHRAE, IIAR, and IIR.
Professor Reindl is an ASHRAE Fellow and a past recipient of ASHRAE’s Distinguished Service Award. HE was the first recipient of ASHRAE’s George C. Briley Award for the best refrigeration article in the ASHRAE Journal. He is a past chair and currently serves as a member of ASHRAE’s Standard 15 committee – Safety Standard for Refrigeration Systems. Professor Reindl has published 7 books and over 100 technical papers on topics including: industrial refrigeration, building mechanical systems, energy systems, and solar energy.
Presentation Description
Standard 15 (Safety Standard for Refrigeration Systems) is one of ASHRAE’s oldest standards dating back to 1919. The purpose of Standard 15 is to specify safe design, construction, installation, and operation of refrigeration systems. All engineers that work with building mechanical systems should have a basic understanding of this Standard and for those engineers that work closely with refrigeration or chilling systems must have a deeper understanding of this standard and its requirements. This presentation will provide a review of Standard 15 and highlight recent changes to the standard. Common misapplications of the standard will be presented and discussed.
